Sadness at the Change of Seasons
A lot of us in the Northern Hemisphere are experiencing some “going into winter” blues. If you’re an empath like me, it’s likely that some of the sadness you’ve been feeling isn’t even yours: It belongs to the collective, which has been programmed to resist winter … for many reasons, which aren’t just about shorter days and colder weather.
For instance, in many parts of the country, people get sad as the fall foliage disappears, because the world outside suddenly seems so brown and grey.
The Angels also want to point out that the end of fall brings some “death” energy. Those beautiful, colorful leaves literally have been dying and falling off the trees.
And yet … while the leaves have died, the trees themselves have not. Rather, the trees have turned inward, sending more energy into their roots as they ready themselves for a winter’s rest.
And we (people) are “built” to do the same. As a part of Nature, we’re built to slow down and turn inward at this time of year. We’re built to welcome this time of more rest, with longer nights and shorter days.
We’re meant to use this precious season to reflect. To harvest the gems of the previous seasons. And we’re meant to “lie fallow” like a field, rejuvenating and getting ready to be fertile again, so that we can burst forth with new growth come spring.
HOWEVER, most of our “systems” … at work, at school, in organizations … do not support us in slowing down and turning inward. If anything, they discourage any sort of slowdown, and they may even discourage reflection and introspection. So, we often end up feeling (or actually getting) punished for not continuing at the same breakneck pace that’s expected all year long.
The Angels have nudged me to share this message with you today because our bodies, minds and spirits are experiencing a lot of the collective resistance to this changing of seasons.
AND the Angels—along with my magical colleague, Adrianne—are reminding us that our individual contributions matter. As we give ourselves permission to rest and refresh … to savor the season and collect the gems from our journeys … we make a real difference in the world. Our relief, our satisfaction, our self-love affects us AND it affects our family, our pets, our plants, our friends, our co-workers. It affects “our little corner of the universe” … and it affects the entire collective.
So, please, honor your body and rest when you’re tired. Honor your heart and be gentle with yourself. Give yourself the time to rejuvenate and refresh. Or, at the very least, do your best to notice and pause whenever you’re pushing through, struggling or striving.
Remember to delegate to the Angels … and allow them to surprise and delight you with how easy and grace-full life truly can be.
