Guidance on Asking for Guidance

Woman standing on stepping stone in middle of pond, looking up for guidance

The other day, some wonderful new Angel wisdom poured through about asking for Divine guidance, and it felt so “Of course!” that I had to share it with you.

I was having a conversation about how people often ask for guidance around “big questions,” like:

  • Is this person “the one”? or

  • Is this the career/work I want to do for the rest of my life?

Typically, these are what the Angels and I call unanswerable questions. We call them that because there are simply too many moving parts and pieces in the universe to be able to answer that question from where you stand now … plus, there are infinite possibilities for how this (and everything) can unfold. As Adrianne pointed out, “When we ask broader questions—the really BIG ones—we’re unintentionally trying to define or limit something that’s meant to unfold in ways that can surprise and delight us beyond what we could plan or predict.”

Of course, questions are amazing and empowering. The Angels and I would never tell you not to ask questions. The key is to ask answerable questions. For instance, unlike our examples above, these questions could be really easy to answer:

  • Do I want to go on one more date with this person?

  • Do I want to take one more class in this field of study? or

  • Do I want to go to this job for one more day … or one more week?

One thing that makes these answerable is that they are much smaller questions.

Avoiding Overwhelm

The Angels want to add: They aren’t trying to hide the big picture from us.

Rather, they’re delivering our guidance in manageable, bite-size morsels. They do this with great Love and compassion, because they know that if they show us the whole picture all at once, we’re quite likely to get overwhelmed. In fact, we know one woman who was shown her whole “purpose” and “life’s work” in a single vision, and it rocked her world so hard that it took more than 10 years for her to get out of overwhelm and begin moving toward that vision.

This is one of the reasons why our Divine guidance typically reveals just one … maybe two … steps at a time.

And (here’s the new part!) the Angels suggested a sort of shortcut for us: Rather than getting frustrated because we’ve been asking all kinds of big-picture questions—or trying to figure out if a question is answerable or unanswerable—the Angels guided us to simply: Ask for the next step.

Brilliant!

The Practice

So, now we get to play with that. We could say (several times a day): Thank you, Angels, for showing me the next step.

Then, all we’d have to do is take that step and see how we feel: Yummy or Yucky? Light or Heavy?

Those feelings ARE our Divine guidance saying:

  • Keep going that way.

  • Or: Go a little to the left or the right.

  • Or: Run the other way!

So, to recap:

  1. We tune into guidance by asking for the next step.

  2. We take that step.

  3. We notice our guidance/feedback about that step.

  4. We act on that guidance.

In other words: Life becomes a really simple “practice” of taking a step, tuning in, taking a step, tuning in.

When I got this message, I was thrilled, because this simplifies everything!

So, how does it feel to you? Any yeah, but’s or WTFs?
